Iconic cathedral in Shushi under Azerbaijani shelling again

PanARMENIAN.Net - Azerbaijan launched a second strike on Ghazanchetsots Cathedral in Shushi, Nagorno-Karabakh on Thursday, October 8, Karabakh presidential aide Davit Babayan has said, according to Aysor.am.

"This is a genocidal policy. They were targeting civilian buildings and the peaceful population, and now they are targeting churches," Babayan said.

Sputnik Armenia reported casualties and said the Azerbaijani military struck the same spot as hours ago.

An Armenian government official revealed that a foreign journalist working in the scene was injured in the shelling and was now being hospitalized.

The cathedral was consecrated in 1888 but was damaged during the March 1920 massacre of Armenians of the city by Azerbaijanis and experienced a decades-long decline, well into the Soviet period. During the Nagorno-Karabakh War, Azerbaijan used the cathedral as an armory to store missiles. It was restored in the aftermath of the war and reconsecrated in 1998.
